The Honourable Bernard W. Hurley, Q.C.
In 1976, he was appointed to the District Court. When the courts were merged in 1990, he became a Judge of what is now the Superior Court of Justice.
He mediates and arbitrates a variety of cases dealing with all types of litigated disputes.
Mr. Hurley was born and raised in Toronto, and received his education there, including an undergraduate degree from St. Michael’s College, U of T, in 1947 and a Certificate to Practice and Call to the Bar at Osgoode Hall in 1950.
Mr. Hurley practiced in Belleville and district, at first with Malcolm Robb, then with Louis Maraskas, and then with a junior. His practice was confined, in the main, to litigation, principally personal injury, matrimonial and real property.
While in the District Court, he organized and managed a circuit of eleven Judges in south eastern Ontario, introduced pre-trial mediation into that circuit, and lectured to his colleagues at the Canada-wide summer seminars and at Ontario Judges’ conferences.
Mr. Hurley was a member of the Rules Committee for about ten years, of the Modified Rules Sub-Committee during the drafting and introduction of the Modified Rules, and of the Education Committee of the Superior Court for about five years. He taught at the annual conference for newly appointed judges from across the country for about 12 years.
Mr. Hurley was actively involved in pre-trial mediation throughout his judicial career.
He received mediation traning from the Stitt Feld Handy Group, a division of ADR Chambers.
