Howard Winkler

Howard is a mediator and arbitrator with ADR Chambers.  He has over 35 years of experience handling disputes in commercial, media and defamation law.

Through his commercial litigation experience, Howard also has experience in insurance, employment, shareholder, entertainment, intellectual property, landlord/tenant and real estate disputes. He has acted for media and plaintiffs and defendants in defamation matters and has a balanced perspective on the interests of all parties.

Howard has developed a risk management approach to mediation that recognizes the benefit to the parties of retaining control over the dispute resolution process, rather than exposing themselves to the uncertainty of having strangers (arbitrators, Judges or a Jury) decide their fate.

Prior to 2014, Howard was a senior partner with Aird & Berlis.  He is a Certified Specialist in Civil Litigation and is peer-rated as a Best Lawyer in Canada in the area of media and defamation law. Howard is the author of the Defamation Law Chapter in the Bullen & Leaks & Jacobs, Canadian Precedents of Pleadings (Carswell) and has contributed to the Ontario government’s review of the current Libel and Slander Act.

Howard earned his LL.B. at The University of Western Ontario and attended Harvard Law School for mediation and negotiation training.

Howard provides services in-person, by video conference and by teleconference.
